Eastside Primetimers has recently supported London-based homelessness charity Providence Row in strengthening its data protection policies in line with the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Providence Row works in East London to tackle the root causes of homelessness, helping people to get off, and stay off, the streets. The charity works with more than 1,400 homeless and vulnerably housed people per year, building their skills and confidence through trainee schemes, language classes and employment support, and providing services for mental health and addiction issues.
With the EU GDPR coming into force on May 25th, many charities face potentially crippling fines if their data protection policies are non-compliant. In April 2017 the Information Commissioner’s Office fined 11 charities a total of £138,000 for data breaches. Earlier, in 2012, a charity was fined £200,000. In addition to the serious financial consequences, adverse PR resulting from a data breach can impact on donor support.
Providence Row enlisted Eastside Primetimers to provide a GDPR compliance review. Our consultant conducted a comprehensive data, systems, and procedures audit, and delivered a report with advice, recommendations, and action points.
Nicola Robson, Marketing Manager at Providence Row, said: “We are a homelessness charity in East London and we recently brought in Eastside Primetimers consultant Mike Griffin to support us to update our data protection policies and procedures so they are in line with the new regulation (GDPR). We have greatly appreciated Mike’s knowledge and expertise on the subject, but also his ability to articulate recommendations in a clear, concise way. He takes the time to understand the organisation and provides very practical and pragmatic advice. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Eastside Primetimers to any other organisation looking for data protection consultancy.”
