Stephen Hickey

Stephen is an experienced Chair, Trustee and Non-Executive working in the charity and NHS sectors.  He has served as Chair of two charities (one national, one local) and as Trustee of others; and is currently Vice Chair and Audit Chair of an NHS Clinical Commissioning Group, and trustee of a transport think tank.  He has provided outside input to Citizens Advice on governance and performance challenges.

His primary focus is governance and he advises on how organisations can strengthen their Board’s composition, systems and processes.

Stephen’s background was in central government, particularly social security and transport. As a Director General in the Department for Work and Pensions he was responsible for social security strategy and finance; and in Transport for introducing integrated, on-line car tax and other motoring services.  He was also Chief Executive of the Civil Service College, providing management training and development in the UK and abroad.

Key skills & experience

Stephen brings practical and personal experience of governance in the charity and wider public sectors. He advises charities on strengthening their Boards – understanding their roles, identifying the skills they need, improving their governance processes etc.

 

Recent projects

Stephen has previously advised on governance challenges in charities in Liverpool and Leeds. He has also provided advice on the (rapidly changing) NHS and the opportunities/challenges this provides to charities wishing to work with it. He is currently advising a London charity on strengthening its Board’s membership and processes.
