Interim Head of HR and Organisational COVID-19 Response
The Refugee Council is a charity delivering services to refugees and asylum seekers across the UK, as well as providing advocacy. They have 210 staff, over 300 volunteers, and use a bank of ‘sessional’ workers, predominantly as interpreters.
The Refugee Council contacted Eastside Primetimers after COVID-19 and the shift to remote working led to an increased workload across the organisation. Though staff and operations had handled the initial move to remote working well, uncertainties about the wider environment and risk of staff strain meant the charity wanted to ensure staff were fully supported.
The Senior Management Team created a new interim management post, an Interim Head of HR and Organisational COVID-19 Response. This role would include providing leadership, senior level experience and advice to the management team, and hands-on assistance as needed to the HR team.
The Refugee Council were looking for a senior HR professional with extensive experience in the charity sector; preferably within a service delivery context. They also needed someone who had the experience and ability to operate at Senior Management level.
We interviewed two candidates, and the final candidate we appointed was an incredibly experienced and versatile HR professional. A former HR Director, she had a track record of delivering change in complex environments at both strategic and operational levels in the not-for-profit sector. This candidate was also experienced in design and delivery of organisational reviews looking at ways of working, people policies and recruitment. She has been a great asset to The Refugee Council.
